Religion is a primitive form of philosophy. You need a world view, a general way of seeing the world, principles to guide the choices you make in life.
Religion gives this to you ready-made. You just have to follow it. You don't even have to really understand it. So when you experience something you want more than some stupid rule you read in some book somewhere that you never really believed in or some trite, bumper sticker, pop song lyric your parents repeated your whole life ad nauseam, of course you'll choose that instead.
Love is usually what "breaks" people, but in reality, they never had their shit together anyway.
