It's moral superiority. Empathy or not, the result is still the exact same holier-than-thou bullshit as just throwing their asses in prison or whatever. I say this, too, as an extremely judgmental person. I just don't believe someone else's value to society or whomever reflects on me, somehow makes me more valuable to society or myself. There's a grave contradiction in there that really damns us all. If everyone shares all the credit and blame morally, then who actually is responsible for any-fucking-thing? 😂
